Painter, draughtsman and teacher whose work can include strong abstract tendencies, born in Ipswich, Suffolk, where he remains a lecturer at Suffolk College School of Art and Design. After studying Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art, 1974-1977; then did a postgraduate certificate in painting and drawing at Royal Academy Schools, 1977-1980. After in 1979 winning the Creswick Landscape, Richard Jack and Landseer Drawing Prizes, in 1981 he gained the Turner Gold Medal for Landscape Painting in Oil and a David Murray Studentship for Landscape Painting, then in 1990 the Laing Landscape Regional Prize. Residencies included Ipswich Museums Arts in Towns Project, 1989. Warnes has exhibited regularly; RA Summer Exhibition, from 1981; a number of Solo Exhibitions at the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich, from 1988 and also Chappel Galleries, Chappel, 1997.
